The Overall Build

A trail-ready GMT800 Suburban built for the Oregon backcountry, camping, and overlanding. Built to be ready to explore day and night, and the test rig for most WillametteGear products.

Front End

The front end runs our own Z71 Fog Light Adapters to mount a set of square LED fog lights cleanly in the factory bumper openings - no cutting, no brackets hanging out. The grille bowtie wears our Bowtie graphic wrap to tie the whole look together.

Roof

The roof turns The Yeti into a self-contained basecamp. Everything is anchored to a custom roof platform we built to carry a full load of gear without flexing or rattling down washboard.

A WildFinder hard-shell rooftop tent pops up in seconds for sleeping anywhere, with a Tuff Stuff 270 awning swinging out for shade and rain cover over camp. A 210-watt solar panel keeps the house battery topped off, and our roof rack light brackets hold a pair of Auxbeam lights for lighting up a campsite or trail.

The big one is Starlink - a dish mounted up top means real high-speed internet from anywhere we can see sky, whether that's working remote from a trailhead or streaming at camp miles past the nearest cell tower. A weBoost booster rides along as backup for pushing a cell signal when it counts.

Suspension

The front end ditches the factory torsion bars entirely for an Atomic Fabrication coilover conversion running Viking coilovers. It's a huge upgrade over a cranked-bar setup - better travel, a far more compliant ride, and real adjustability to dial in ride height and damping.

Out back, a set of H2 springs paired with Bilstein 5100 shocks levels the stance and keeps the rear planted under a full load of camp gear and a loaded roof. All in, the setup nets about 2 to 3 inches of lift (maybe closer to 1" in the rear) - enough to clear 32s and soak up washboard and beach ruts without turning a full-size Suburban into a tippy mall crawler. I think I can fit a bigger tire on it once it's in the budget; I put these Wildpeak AT4Ws on it prior to the suspension work.

To handle the increased angles from the conversion, the front runs Trackmotive heavy-duty CV axles so nothing binds or grenades at full droop out on the trail.

Front cabin of the Suburban with an Auxbeam switch panel mounted in the dash cubby and an Olight flashlight in a custom cup holder mount
05

Interior - Front

An Auxbeam switch panel drops cleanly into our cubby mount below the aftermarket Pioneer head unit, putting the lighting and accessory controls right at your fingertips instead of being drilled permanently into your dash.

Down in the console, our Olight mount cup holder keeps a Baton4 flashlight charged and locked in place, and the cup holders are wide and deep enough to keep a drink from spilling unlike the factory ones.

Interior - Mid

The middle row is set up to keep gear organized and reachable on the move. Our rear console table mount holds a tablet within easy reach for navigation and trip planning, and our back seat gear bags hang off the seatbacks to keep tools, recovery gear, and small essentials sorted instead of rolling around the floor.

With one of the captain's chairs folded flat, there's a dedicated spot to strap down a Cordova cooler - food and drinks stay put and stay cold whether we're crawling a forest road or running the beach.
